This symbol, which is a blend of indigenous Taino imagery from the Dominican Republic and Ancient Etruscan references from Rome, is a symbol I developed to represent my work and identity. It features Atabey, the Taino goddess of fertility and the earth, the Taino symbol of the sun and Etruscan concentric circles, olive leaves, and the colors on the Italian flag and the Dominican flag.
Based off of a sketchbook doodle and rendered digitally.

Getting My Hair Done

In this video I worked with an Italian hairdresser from Orchard ST and the hairdressers from a Dominican salon in West Bronx. The video documentation is set in a two-channel video to compare how each representative of either culture approaches my hair and the differences in the final style. This project creates a duality between the exoticising of 'afro" hair within Western society with the lingering "blanqueamiento" (white-washing) efforts of black Caribbean societies.
